In July 1967, Russell Blatz was credited with saving the lives of several members of his platoon after they were badly injured by a booby trap hidden in thick elephant grass. His Bronze Star citation said in part:
"He braved the booby trapped areas repeatedly in treating his casualties, and when the platoon medical corpsman arrived, Private Blatz led him through the dangerous vegetation ... Private Blatz's courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service …"

Blatz, who had dropped out of high school in 1966 and was drafted, was promoted in November. Two months later, he was dead.

Russell was our neighbor during his youth in Farmingdale, NY and a friend of my brother. He lived with his married sister, Hazel Jensen, went through High School with us.
