The monument for his parents, John Lynch (1825-1892), his wife Ellen C. (1822-1877) and two of their three children: daughter Alice who died at ten months, and son Ferdinand who died at three months.

John Jr., their third child, was born in 1851.
After their marriage in 1848, Ellen and John lived in Portland where he owned a Fore Street grocery store. In the early 1860s he managed the Portland Daily Press and was elected to the Maine legislature. He then succeeded Lorenzo de Medici Sweat as the District 1 representative (1865-1873) in Washington. He remained in Washington and established the Washington Daily Union and the Potomac Terra Cotta Company which manufactured bricks and drain pipes. Suffering from heart disease, he died while visiting Portland.
