Australian Army Military Medal recipient who served in both world wars. Angove served four years in the senior cadets and two years in the 16th Australian Infantry Battalion of the part time Citizen Military Forces. He was an apprentice bootmaker in Newcastle for two and a half years but when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on May 17, 1916 he was a shunter living at Adamstown, a suburb of Newcastle. He was allotted service number 2521 and posted to the 35th Battalion, a unit of the 9th Brigade, 3rd Australian Division. He embarked from Sydney, aboard HMAT A11 Ascanius on October 25, 1916. He disembarked at Devonport, England on December 28 and joined the 9th Brigade Training Battalion. He joined the 35th Battalion in France on February 7, 1917. Angove was wounded on July 27 rejoicing his unit on August 15. He was again wounded at the Battle of Passchendaele, Belgium on October 12 rejoining his battalion on November 8. The 35th Battalion was at Curlu, north of the Somme some 15 kilometres south east of Albert on August 28, 1918 when Angove was commended for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the advance to the objective Corporal Angove's section was held up by a machine gun. He at once pushed up on a flank with his Lewis gun and engaged the enemy, who immediately retaliated. Corporal Angove thereupon rushed them and killing three captured the gun, thus enabling he men to proceed. He was awarded the Military Medal. He was granted leave in Paris from September 4 to 15 and was wounded again on September 30. He rejoined his unit in early November and returned to Australia on June 12, 1919 where he was discharged. Angove with service number N74846 served with the 32nd Infantry Training Battalion during the Second World War from June 27, 1940 to October 11, 1943 reaching the rank of sergeant.
