Prime Minister of Denmark . He served as Prime Minister of Denmark from October 5, 1972 to December 19, 1973 and then from February 13, 1975 to September 10, 1982. He left school after the 7th grade to work in a warehouse, and it was through this job that he became active in various trade unions and then later, the Social Democratic Party. In 1964 was elected to the parliament as a member of the Social Democratic Party where he would be a part of for the next thirty years. In October of 1972 he was appointed to the position of Prime Minister, succeeding Jens Otto Krag and served in this position until the 1973 election which saw Liberal Party leader Poul Hartling succeed him. After a year in opposition, he became Prime Minister in 1975 as part of a Social Democratic minority government. In 1978 he expanded the government by bringing the Liberal Party into the fold to try to solve urgent economic problems. This alliance lasted for a year until breaking up and then for the rest of his term, he led a solitary Social Democratic government. He stepped down as Prime Minister on September 10, 1982, but remained party leader until his resignation in 1987. During his two tenures as prime minister, he was seen as a strong leader, but his numerous social policies led to deficits. In 1990 he was named "Dane of the Year".
