Margaret was born on August 22, 1941, in West Carthage, a daughter of the late Elwood Gates and Ruth Arlene Nicholl Waugh and attended both West Carthage and Copenhagen schools and received her GED. On August 29, 1959, she was married to Maurice R. Vary, Sr. in the Copenhagen United Congregational Church with Rev. John C. Wetzel officiating. The couple raised their five children, Maurice R. Jr, Donald G., Holly J., Bryan C. and Dawn M. on the family homestead. In January of 1989, Margaret and her husband bought "Hillbilly Heaven", a bar and grill they operated until 2003, when they sold the business. Margaret was a member of the United Church of Copenhagen. As a young girl she attended the Deer River Congregational Church, was a member of the Hagenettes 4-H Club and later became a member of the Harrisburg Grange. She especially loved dancing and listening to old country music, knitting while watching NASCAR and college basketball on TV, going for rides on Sunday and going to the Lewis County Fair. Margaret was a dedicated volunteer delivering Meals-on-Wheels and raising money for the Heart Association.
