Thomas Cornelius Maguire was born 1793 in Ireland son of Cornelius & Catherine Maguire. The family arrived in Boston in 1801 & then to Kennebec, Maine. Thomas came to New Orleans about 1821 where he later became a successful merchant in the firm Justamond & Maguire in New Orleans, LA. He married Mary Ann Annette Burge 1828 in Lawrence Co., MS. They had a son William Abner Maguire & daughter Amanda Maguire. Thomas became ill in November 1833 & though three doctors tried various means to cure him he died 28 Dec. 1833 in his home in New Orleans. He was buried after a service in St. Louis Cathedral in a large tomb in St. Louis Cemetery #2.
His widow Mary Ann married again to her second husband lawyer, John Jones Mcrae in Oct. 1835 in Pearlington, MS. He went on to become MS state senator & later MS governor.
Mary Ann died in Mobile, AL in 1866. John McRae died in Belize, British Honduras. For all info on Thomas Maguire's death - see Orleans Parish, LA wills & probates on Ancestry.com & same in Familysearch.org both have his handwritten will from June 1833 in New Orleans & extensive probate records under name of Thomas Maguire beginning in Jan. 1834 through about 1840 in New Orleans. Also Deposition of his wife Mary Ann Maguire (the name by which she was known in all records & letters in New Orleans, yes her maiden name is Mary Annette Burge)in which she says her husband died in his home in New Orleans, LA on the evening of 28 Dec 1833. He had been ill for 2 months prior to his death (his obit in Columbian Centennial Newspaper says he died in New Orleans , another obit in Jesuit Newspaper in Boston says he had been ill two months & left behind wife & children.). His burial records are from St. Louis Cathedral Archives, the actual bills for his burial are located in the probate records including bill from the church for the mass & burial, bill for his coffin, the undertakers bill for rental of hearse, etc., bill for marble name plaque for his burial vault. Bills from the 3 doctors who treated him, one of whom Dr. Ker was one of best doctors in New Orleans & head of Charity Hospital at that time. Other items in the probate file include inventory of Maguire's estate, many bills incurred by Thomas & Mary Ann Maguire, bills of the Partnership of Justamond & Maguire, real estate holdings of the firm, lawsuits against the estate, lawsuits against Maguire's business partner Isidore Justamond made by lawyers of Cornelius Maguire on behalf of his grandson William Abner Maguire's inheritance, copies of the firm's business books, notes from Justamond concerning the Maguire's slaves & his treatment of them. Lastly two very interesting letters written by Mary Ann Maguire which were included in the probate records. The letters written in 1835 are from her to Isidore Justamond written while she was living in Pearlington, MS. In the first she complains to him of the situation in which she, her son William & niece Eliza are in being broke with no money for rent, little food & depending on the kindness of strangers. She says she has never gone without before, is living on rice & coffee. She says send money & with a list of food as soon as possible. There is a note in the probate file showing he does send money via a ships captain. The second letter from Mary Ann to Justamond announces her recent engagement & upcoming marriage to John McRae the lawyer who will be coming to New Orleans to make his (Justamonds) acquaintance & escort him to Pearlington to their small wedding. Very different tone in both letters, Mary Ann knows she has Justamond in a corner as she now has a lawyer for her husband to be. Other sources on Thomas Maguire are the 1830 New Orleans Census, enties starting in 1822 onwards for Maguire in New Orleans City Directories. So it seems that Thomas Maguire did not drown in the Pearl River after all & did not live in Monticello, MS. He did marry Mary Ann Burge(Annette) there in 1828. Her brother Thomas Burge & his family lived in Monticello & had an inn there, maybe that's where Maguire met Mary Ann.
