Composer. Born into a wealthy Northamptonshire England family, this musical genius composed more than one hundred thirty film scores, nine symphonies, seven ballets, two operas, a musical and over twenty concertos. His love for music was sparked when at the age of twelve he met famed trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Four years later he was awarded a scholarship to study the trumpet at the Royal College of Music in London. Although a talented trumpet player he decided, in the late 1940s, to dedicate his energy to composing. In 1958, he became the first British composer to win an Academy Award when he won the Oscar for the music to "Bridge Over the River Kwai". Some of his other film scores include, "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness", "Hobson's Choice", "Whistle Down the Wind" and "David Copperfield". In 1970 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1986 was given the Ivor Nobello Award for "Outstanding Service to British Music". He died from complications resulting from a chest infection.
