My paternal grandmother. Kathleen Agnes Flake was born in Cape Vincent, New York in 1903. She spent most of her youth in nearby Clayton, New York. Her parents were George Flake (d.12/1/1910) and Clara (Thompson) Larkins (d. 10/28/1962).
She married Ernest E. Miller from Kingston, Ontario in 1925 at the St. Vincent de Paul Rectory in Cape Vincent. They had six children: Marshall D. Miller; Arnold (Arnie) Francis Miller (my father); Joyce (husband Douglas) Tryon; Bernard (Bernie) Miller; Monica (Peggy) Oostrom (husband M. Martin) and Ann Bruschke. In 1930 the family moved to Kingston, Ontario where her husband was from. Marshall and Arnold were born in New York State. The family relocated to Kingston, Ontario on 11/29/1930 where the remaining four children were born in Canada.
Kathleen had a heart attack in 1960 which she survived but which left her unwell for the remainder of her life (6 years). She and Ernest were legally separated in the early 1960's at which time he retired and eventually moved to Zephyrhills, Florida. Kathleen lived at 725 Union St. in Clayton, New York in the final seven years of her life. She died at 9:05 am at Mercy Hospital in Watertown, New York on January 28, 1966.
She never met her son Arnie's children, as we lived in Tucson. I did speak to her on the telephone several times. She wanted me to be an alter-boy (never happened!) My Uncle Bernie Miller visited us in Tucson in the early 1960's.
My father, Arnold, died of carcinoma of the lower-bowel in 1971. Except for a visit from his brother Marshall (Dusty) Miller while we were living in Salina, Kansas in 1976 - we lost contact with the paternal side of the family.
