Donald was the favored youngest son - the caboose, born to a railroad conductor. He served in the Southern States Mission, where he learned his love of scriptures and the Plan of Salvation. He was stationed in Japan in the US Army as a Company Clerk as the Korean conflict ended. He graduated from BYU then moved to Salt Lake where he courted his favorite student nurse. He married Verna Brimhall in the Salt Lake Temple on December 29, 1958.
Donald built a successful insurance and tax business, which allowed him to take his family on trips in the family car each Summer. He loved serving in the South Cottonwood Stake, especially as Bishop of the Third Ward. He served as a host at the Provo MTC and for 15 years as a Temple worker in the Jordan River and Provo Temples (where he was just released). He served as a missionary with his wife at the Kirtland, Ohio Visitors' Center in 2001-02. Donald was a loyal BYU Cougar and took his family to football and basketball games over 5 decades. Donald survived his parents, brother Howard, and sisters Shirley Hale and Phyllis Jensen. As they passed on, he transferred all that love to his nephews and nieces. He loved to tease, enjoyed a good joke or funny story, and had an infectious laugh. He maintained many lifelong relationships with cousins and tax clients alike - everyone was a cherished friend. Dad had a love of the Gospel and of family, and will be greatly missed.
He is now united in the Spirit World with his dear son Todd. He is survived by his wife, his children Elliott (Carrie), Margaret Ludlow (Jared), Craig (Aliesa), Dallin (Amy), Donald (Amy), and Emily Heaton (Brad), 30 grandchildren (including Sister Matalyn Nelson in the Nauvoo Visitor Center Mission), and five great-grandchildren.
A viewing/celebration of his life will be held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, February 5th at the Chapel at 981 Revere Circle, Salt Lake City (where he served as bishop), and 11:00 to 12:30 Saturday February 6th at the Provo, Sharon East Stake Center 2450 North 1060 East, Provo, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Gardens.
