Dutch marine painter. Mesdag ended 1866 his banking career to become a professional painter. 1869 Mesdag is admitted to the Pulchri Studio Painters' Society. 1881 he paints the "Panorama Mesdag" together with his wife Sina and some colleagues. On 1 August the "Panorama Mesdag" is opened to the public. In 1903 he donated his house and his complete collection of paintings to the Netherlands; the house is now known as "the Museum Mesdag".
