In 1920, during the civil war that followed the Russian Revolution, Nina was one of seven Russian children adopted by Admiral Newton McCully. He was an American representative in Sevastapol at the time.

She served as a Navy nurse during World War II, and later worked as a senior abstractor at the aerospace information division of the Library of Congress.

Married George von Bretzel in 1945. Two children.
