Joseph Howard Blumberg, 73, recently of Sandy Springs and then Marietta, GA, passed away on December 4, 2015, ending his brave 9-year battle with prostate cancer.

He was born in Utica, NY, on July 20, 1942. Joey Blumberg (as he was known as a child) moved with his parents Max Blumberg and Rose Mitchell Blumberg to Toledo, OH before he was three. A Bar Mitzvah at B'nai Israel synagogue and a 1960 graduate of DeVilbiss High School, he studied electrical engineering at the University of Toledo. He was President of the Student Union Board and a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.

Joe never wanted the life of an engineer. He developed and sold data communication systems for Ohio Bell and managed human resources at ITT Service Industries, Berwind, and Comshare. He studied organizational behavior at Case Western Reserve University (MS management, 1971) and became an entrepreneur, moved to Atlanta in 1982, and built businesses in executive recruiting, employee assistance programs, employee satisfaction surveys, and market research for the computer software and services industry (Vertex Management and Specifics, Inc.).

Over the years, Joe's interests included teaching, programming, dancing, investing (if not always successfully), ADAPSO, hot air ballooning, travel, art, wine, his green Corvette, and writing a book, "Finders Keepers." But as he wrote in his amazing family story, Joe was most proud of the legacy that is his kids and grandkids, and he considered himself rich, "not in dollars, but in our family relationships and the enjoyment we get from family and friends." And golf. Definitely golf. Especially during biennial family Thanksgivings at the beach.

Joe is survived by his wife, Cathleen, to whom he was married for 37 years; as well as his four children, Jay Schleusener of Nashville, TN, Cathy Talley of Marietta, GA, Stephen Blumberg of Annapolis, MD, and Mark Blumberg of Longmeadow, MA, and seven grandchildren, Connor (14), Charlie (13), Joss (12), Caitlyn (12), Charlotte (10), Sam (10), and Avery (6).

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 10, at Temple Kol Emeth, 1415 Old Canton Rd., Marietta, GA.

When Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late 2006, he took an aggressive course of action to combat it. With similar passion and deep commitment, he encouraged other men to take charge of their own health and supported them and their families as they dealt with serious illnesses. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to the Men's Health and Wellness Center:
menshealthandwellness.org,
the nonprofit organization where Joe was, for the past 7 years, its Executive Director.

Joe always told his kids and grandkids to "do good work." Thanks, Papa, for setting a great example. You are loved and will be truly missed.
