Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a farmer, Patrick Joseph O'Donnell came from Kilraine near the village of Glenties and frequenting the National School of Lower Kilkraine and the High School of Letterkenny, entered the Catholic University of Dublin in 1873. Joining Saint Patrick's College in Maynooth two years later, he was ordained priest there on June 29, 1880 by Cardinal Edward McCabe. Lecturing dogmatic and moral theology at St. Patrick's Seminary until 1884, he was appointed prefect of the Dunboyne Establishment that same year. A prolific author on moral theology and canon law, O'Donnell was elected bishop of Raphoe on February 26, 1888 at the early age of thirty one, becoming thus the then youngest bishop in the world. Receiving his episcopal consecration at Raphoe on April 3 of that year, he played a chief role in the struggle between landlords and tenants in Donegal during the Plan of Campaign and held an active participation in Irish life during the Great War. Promoted to titular archbishopric see of Attalia and appointed coadjutor of Armagh with right of succession on January 14, 1922, he succeeded to the archdiocese, becoming thus Primate of Ireland, on the death of Cardinal Michael Logue which occurred on November 19, 1924. Pope Pius XI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of December 14, 1925 with the title of Santa Maria della Pace. He passed away in office, succumbing to pneumonia and double pleurisy in Carlingford. His remains lie buried in the cathedral grounds of the cathedral of Saint Patrick in Armagh. A monument in his memory has been since erected outside St. Eunan's cathedral of Letterkenny.
