Police said the accident happened a little before 2 a.m. Wednesday when a sport utility vehicle apparently lost control and struck a tree on Lee Chapel Road in the Burke area.
Authorities said the Infiniti SUV was traveling westbound on Lee Chapel Road when it went off the roadway on the right, then came back across the centerline and struck the tree on the left side of the road. The vehicle then flipped over.
The driver, Jamie Alexandra Grimsley, 18, of Mason Neck, Va., died at the scene of the crash. Grimsley, who was active in cheerleading and was a popular student, had recently graduated from Hayfield High School. Friends said she was scheduled to begin college Friday.
