US Congressman. In 1797, he immigrated to the United States with his parents and engaged in mercantile pursuits. At age eighteen he began to study law, was admitted to the bar in 1809 and began legal practice in Augusta, Georgia. Elected solicitor general of the superior court of Richmond County, he became Georgia's first Attorney General in 1811. In 1815, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress serving until 1817. He was elected as a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth Congress to fill the vacancy in 1824 and subsequently elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth Congress, Twenty-first, Twenty-second and Twenty-third Congresses serving from 1827 to 1835. From 1835 to 1840, he traveled Europe, studied literature and made a reputation as a poet. In 1843, he moved to New Orleans, established a legal firm and continued his literary pursuits. He also was a professor of constitutional law in the law department at the University of Louisiana, New Orleans. Cause of death, yellow fever.
