Walter Bäumer (* 17. Oktober 1908 in Bünde; † 30. Juni 1941 in Herford) war ein deutscher Rennfahrer.


Walter Bäumer starb 32-jährig bei einem privaten Autounfall. Er fuhr in den frühen Morgenstunden des 30. Juni 1941 auf der Salzufler Straße in Herford in einen Graben, rammte dort einen Mast und erlitt einen Schädelbruch. Als Todeszeitpunkt wurde 2 Uhr 25 angegeben. Die Unfallumstände gelten als rätselhaft.


Mercedes-Benz Works Racing Driver. Born in Bünde, Westphalia, Germany, Walter Bäumer took up motorcycle racing and showed great promise by winning twelve races. After a serious crash he turned to cars racing a 750cc Drixi and a BMW, mostly against his arch rival Bobby Kohlrausch. He gained the nickname 'Walter von der Wartburg' because he drove a BMW Wartburg. From 1932 until 1939 he dominated his class in hillclimbs, driving his 747cc Austin racing car. In 1937 he took class wins in Shelsley Walsh (UK) and Freiburg. After a Mercedes-Benz test drive he was made reserve driver for the Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Team. He drove the Mercedes-Benz W125 GP car during practice for the 1937 German Grand Prix. In 1938 he raced the car but retired on lap 15 with engine trouble. In the Swiss GP he finished 10th. In the non-Championship Donnington GP he took over Caracciola's car, but when came in to refuel after 43 laps, the car was damaged when it caught fire. In the 1939 Belgrade GP he crashed on lap 17. World War II intervened and he was never able to show his true potential. The high point of his career was in 1940 when he and Huschke von Hanstein drove a BMW 328 Touring Coupe to victory in the Grand Prix of Brescia, a road race which was to all intense and purposes was equivalent to the Mille Miglia. During the Summer of 1941, he died as the result of a freak accident. Driving between Herford and Bünde, he was kissed by a female companion whilst driving, The car left the road and came to a halt in a ditch. The impact caused the driver's door to fly open and he was thrown out into a field. His neck struck a sharp wooden object and he lost his life.
