Tena Mae Van Wyngarden was born on July 29, 1923, in the Lower Grove vicinity in Mahaska County, Iowa. She was the third of seven children that were born to Walter and Sadie Stursma Van Wyngarden.

Tena Mae was baptized and made profession of her faith at the Peoria Christian Reformed Church and graduated from the Peoria Christian Grade School in Peoria, Iowa. She attended the Pella Public High School in Pella, Iowa until her family needed her assistance in their home. Tena Mae continued to reside at home with her parents until the time of her marriage.

On August 20, 1945, she and James Everett Bandstra were united in marriage at Tracy, Iowa. This was the same date and they had the same minister that her parents had when they were married 27 years previously. Following their marriage Jim and Tena Mae began farming on the Bandstra family home farm near Taintor, Iowa and to this union three sons were born: Roger Lee on July 20, 1946, Darwin James on September 14, 1949 and Terry James on December 27, 1950.

A few weeks after Terry was born, Tena Mae suffered a stroke which affected her speech and motor activities. Despite this affliction, she continued to maintain the home and raise her family. She bore this trial with courage and Jim was always there to help out. Subsequently Tena Mae and Jim and their family moved into Peoria in 1952. Jim continued to farm near Peoria, having a crop and livestock operation, while assisting Tena Mae with the homemaking.

They became members of the Lower Grove Church and enjoyed the company of relatives and friends.

On Monday evening, November 5, 2007, she passed away in the presence of her family at their residence in Peoria at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 6 days.

Those who will cherish her memory are her husband of 62 years, Jim; their son, Terry and his wife, Lona (Van Wyk) Bandstra all of Pella; and nine grandchildren. They are: Pamela Sue (Hewitt) and Eloy Flores of Dyer, IN, Jeffrey Rex and Jennifer Hewitt of Panora, Renae Leann Bandstra of Des Moines, Faron James and Michelle Bandstra of Woodward, Andrew Lee Bandstra of Corbett, OR, Angela Kay Bandstra of Chicago, IL, Matthew James and Charity Bandstra of Green Mountain, Katie Jane and Jesse Peterson of Pella and Jennie Jo and Lucas Balmer of Pella.

Tena Mae's family has grown to include 16 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Bandstra; Cornie and Erma (Vander Hart) Van Wyngarden; Minnie (Henry) Van Wyngarden; Helen (Donald) Van Wyngarden all of Pella; Jerry and Betty (Steenhoek) Van Wyngarden of Holland, Michigan; Alda and Dyal Chand of India; Gerdena (Dick) Bandstra of Knoxville, Iowa; and Dr. Andrew J.
