Basil H. Minnich was the son of Samuel Minnich and Anna Mary Strock. He joined the U.S. Army at an early age and served in a number of posts, including Fort Yellowstone and Fort Huachuca, Arizona. While at Fort Huachuca he led a group of indian scouts whose job it was to keep Apaches on the reservation. After working as a special inspector for the Cumberland Valley Railroad, in the 1920's he joined the Prohibition Enforcement agency of the U.S. government. After prohibition was lifted, he continued to work for the Treasury Department until his death. During much of this period, he was also in the U.S. Army reserve, where he served as a cavalry officer, spending part of each summer teaching new recruits at Fort Meyer, Virginia.
