Joseph E. Averill was born in Maine to Jotham Donnell Averill and Catherine Campbell. He left Maine by 1884 and resided in California, before coming north to Snohomish, Washington. There, he met and married Anna Maddox and they had at least four children: Easter, born 1890; Forest, born 1892; Valera, born 1900; and Howard, born 1902.

Son Forest (1892-1981) is buried in the GAR cemetery, memorial #37554092.

Jotham Averill's remains may have been removed to another area cemetery. As with many of the burials in this pioneer cemetery, some graves were removed and interred at the GAR Cemetery in Snohomish when the county began clearing land for the Highway, which went through the middle of the cemetery.
