Enlisted at 18 years of age for a-year term of enlistment in Company E, 55th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, February 6, 1864. Wounded at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia May 15, 1864. Mustered out July 11, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. His name is on Panel #9 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. Applied for a soldiers' invalid pension, Dec. 3, 1870 which was issued as Certificate #116899 in Ohio.

His was was Julia Ann (nee Litchfield), in Ohio in 1851. They were married May 21, 1871. In the 1880 U.S. Census for Cleveland they resided at 34 Tray Street in Cleveland. His was a sheet iron worker. At the time their children were listed as Albert, 12; John W., 8, Alice, 5; Hattie, 9 months, all born in Ohio. At the time ofhis death from nephritis and senility, his address was listed as 1315 Kenilworth, Lakewood, Ohio. He was shown as the father of Mrs. Alice Fox, Mrs. Harriet Vosburgh, Mrs. J.L. Duffner, and Joseph. Post 151, Grand Army of the Republic was in charge of the funeral with burial at Lakewood Park Cemetery. There was no mention of his wife, Julia, who died in 1900. Her place of burial is unknown.
