Shirley Naomi Kanani Garcia

May 6, 1967 – May 30, 2015

Her smile was the first thing people noticed and the last thing

they remembered of their time together with her. She shared her faith,

humor, grace, strength of heart and her hope with everyone she met.

She put family first and was tireless in her energy to fight for what was right.

Shirley Naomi Kanani Garcia was born on the island of Oahu at Tripler Hospital. She was the youngest of three children born to Tokiko and Robert Garcia. She was raised here in Hawaii and also on the East Coast, living in South Carolina and Maryland. She graduated from Fort Meade Senior HS in Maryland and went on to get her BS in Economics at the University of Maryland. During her freshman year she lived with her best friend and “sister”, Ana Liza Walker. She graduated from the University of Maryland with several Academic Scholar awards. After working in the Washington D.C. area for several years, she returned to Hawai’i to pursue a law degree. She graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. She was later invited to sit on the school’s Law Review. Upon receiving her law degree, Shirley started her career as an Attorney with the Hawai’i Civil Rights Commission. She was dedicated to her career and blessed with many wonderful people to work alongside with. She became a member of the Na Wahine Hui ‘O Kamehameha, Kahekili Chapter IV and the Maui Chapter of the Ka’ahumanu Society. She spent her free time traveling, enjoying foods of all kinds, volunteering with many different community organizations, danced hula or just danced. She was an avid reader and had a passion for rainbows.

She taught us all what it truly means to be courageous, fearless, faithful and forgiving. She lived her life in a manner that was inspired by our Grandparents. She put everyone first without hesitation or regret. She strived to always keep our ‘ohana together and connected. She lived to serve. She lived her life!

Shirley is the youngest sister of Margaret Garcia Dalzell (David) and Daniel Bal Garcia (Arleen Ricalde).

She is the loving and devoted Aunty to Bailey Kahealani Miyoshi Dalzell (14), Noah La’akea Garcia (13) and Jacob Ha’aheo Garcia (10).

“God has called me home today. But, I am not far away. Cry if you must, but don’t cry for me. I am happy, I’m finally free. I thank you for the love you’ve shown. But, now it’s time that I go home. Please keep my memory alive in your heart, for these things I know will never part. If you should need me I’ll be there, just listen and your heart will hear. I am home now with loved ones who have passed. It’s okay for I’m home at last. And, I will love each and every one of you. Please never forget that, for it’s true. When it’s time for you to come my way, I’ll take your hand, smile and say Welcome Home!”

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the doctors at the Maui Medical Group. Especially, to Dr. Art Chasen, who performed and shared miracles. And, his extraordinary team and staff, who went above and beyond providing more than just medical care.

We would also like to send our deepest appreciation to the Dr. Chen and his staff at the Pacific Cancer Center. And, we would like to extend our sincerest Aloha to the nurses and aides at Maui Memorial Medical Center. The care, love and encouragement for healing you shared with our sister is priceless.

Shirley Naomi’s celebration of life will be held at St. Anthony’s church in Wailuku on June 12, 2015. The viewing will begin at 9am and the service will start at 11am.
