Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He entered Civil War service on July 22, 1861, when he was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company E, 4th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. He led his company for over a year, then was honorably mustered out on August 31, 1862. A little over a month later he rejoined the Union war effort, being commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 13th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. At it's beginning the regiment only had eight of the required ten companies needed for a full regiment, so William Brown held command of the unit as a Lieutenant Colonel until January 1864, when the final two companies joined, completing it's organization. On January 18, 1864 William Brown was promoted to Colonel. Initially service in the brigade of General Rutherford B. Hayes, Colonel Brown took over brigade command when the future 19th United States President was elected to Congress, and resigned his commission. Colonel Brown was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the field during the war".
