William Gilmore Mulford and his brother Leonard Gilmore Mulford were the adopted sons of James Nephi and Rachel Anna (Neville) Mulford. Their biological parents were Joseph Green Gilmore and Mary Ellen Bate. The 1910 US Census confirms the adoptive status, and the fact that Rachel Anna had no biological children. The couple had been married since 1890 and were childless. Joseph Green Gilmore died in 1901, and his wife, Mary Ellen (Bate) Gilmore died in 1907. After the death of Joseph Gilmore, Mary Ellen remarried and had two more children, a boy and a girl, before her 1907 death.
