It was while living with his father in Eatontown, New Jersey, that Donald enlisted in the Marines 26 February 1966, at a recruiting in Newark.
Arriving in Vietnam, Donald was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation
Prairie IV south southwest of Con Thien (Hill 158), when the battalion encountered
a large hostile force in the area. Donald died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the left arm and both legs from hostile mortar fire. The battalion lost 33 Marines and 2 Corpsman, during the intense fighting against hostile forces.
Tour of duty unknown.
Survived by his father, Howard Halvorsen of Box 130, Water Street, Eatontown, New Jersey and his mother; Marguerita Halvorsen of West End, St John, Newfoundland, Canada.
