Collector for Port of Astoria - Attorney
Went to Harvard where he took up the study of law, being admitted to the bar. In 1848 he was sent by the US Government to the west to full the position of collector of customs for the Pacific Coast, with the headquarters in Astoria. He came way of Panama crossing the Isthmus, where he was obliged to live for 6 weeks, waiting for a vessel that would bring him northward. He then took up a Donation Land Claim in Caltsop County, Astoria. He remained in the office of Collector for 12 years.
