Mr. Hanley worked as a designer for local performing arts companies for more than 20 years. After moving to Memphis in the early 1970s, he began designing costumes for dance companies, including the old Ballet South and the old Tennessee Ballet. He also did costume work for theaters.
In recent years, Mr. Hanley did much of his costuming for Opera Memphis. Lately, he had been working on sketches for the company's production of Benjamin Britten's Turn of the Screw scheduled for next year.
Having studied art in his native Pittsburgh as well as St. Louis, Mr. Hanley was a prolific painter and created large allegorical paintings, often on religious or Memphis themes.
