Judie (Cummins) Edwards, 60, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Memphis on February 3, 2015. Named as Judith Ann Cummins, she was born on February 15, 1954 in Philadelphia PA to Dr. and Mrs. Alvin J. (Claire) Cummins. That same year, her family moved to Memphis where she was a lifelong resident. Judie attended St. Agnes Academy and then graduated from White Station High School in 1973. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Fontbonne University in St. Louis. Judie’s first job was at Malmo Advertising followed by a career at WREG News Channel 3, the CBS affiliate in Memphis. Judie’s career was cut short by a brain tumor which required multiple surgeries. Her final surgery, unfortunately, left her paralyzed on her left side. Judie did not, however, let her disabilities slow her down. To the contrary, she poured more energy into helping others in a similar situation. Judie worked as a volunteer, traveling by public buses, to Baptist East Hospital, the VA Hospital, and St. Peter’s Home. Many friendships developed from these volunteer efforts. Judie touched many lives with her strength, faith, tenacity, and independence. Judie was also active in the Stroke Club of Memphis for almost 20 years. She enjoyed baking desserts for their meetings, arranging speakers, and spending time with the Stroke Club members. Judie was a devoted member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was determined to get to Sunday mass any way she could despite her disabilities. She felt blessed to be among the congregation. Judie will be dearly missed by family and friends. She is survived by one sister, Sandra Stallings, Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, Gregory (Ruth) Cummins, Carmel, Indiana; one nephew, Colin Cummins, Indianapolis, Indiana; two nieces, Diane (Scott) Holton, Des Moines, Iowa and Erin Cummins, Carmel, IN; and two great-nieces, Carter and Lilly Holton, Des Moines, Iowa. Judie was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Dr. James O. Stallings III. Visitation will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Memphis. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stroke Club of Memphis, 4002 Brittain Cove, Memphis, TN 38135.
