Scientist, Ethnographer, and Surveyor. Geologist, author, teacher, civil servant, geographer, anthropologist, and paleontologist. He is considered one of Canada's greatest scientists. At age 12, he was inflicted with tuberculosis of the spine. He surveyed the international boundary of western Canada from 1872 to 1876. Beginning in 1883, he was working for the Canadian government to map out the Canadian Rockies.
