Van R. Gaby Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

GABY, Van R. VAN R. GABY (May 21, 1928-April 29, 2010) Van R. Gaby of Suwanee, GA, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle completed his earthly journey on April 29th, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents Orvel L. and Verna M. Gaby, along with daughter Barbara Gaby Nettles. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Gaby; son, Mark L. Gaby and his wife Stacy of Edmond, OK; son-in-law, James N. Nettles of Decatur, GA; sister, Joan Gaby Reagin of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Brendan M. Gaby. Hilary E. Gaby, Eve M. Nettles and Ellen E. Nettles. Van was born and raised in Flint Michigan. At the age of nineteen, he moved to Georgia and met his future wife Jean Nixon Gaby as the girl living next door in Decatur. They were married on June 3, 1953 and enjoyed close to 57 years of a wonderful and loving marriage. Van began his family and career in Atlanta working for General Motors following 2 years of Military service. Both his son Mark and daughter Barbara were born in Atlanta. In 1961 Van was transferred with General Motors to Southern California, and he brought his family to live in the city of Fullerton in Orange County. He loved doing family activities and the Gaby's enjoyed a wide variety of beach, desert and mountain adventures all within 1-2 hours of the Fullerton area. Van and Jean both developed an interest in taking the family on scenic vacations to various National and State parks throughout California and several other western states. Without question one of Van's strongest gifts was that of practical service. As large as his honey-do list was from time to time, Van originated many more of his projects by his own desire to do something nice for someone. It was very rare that Van would do a project for himself as he enjoyed far more helping others. Even after the children were married, Van continued to give his energy to an endless list of wonderful household projects for both Mark and Barbara that usually involved his love of woodworking. After retirement from General Motors in 1987 following over 40 years of service, Van and Jean enjoyed spending their additional free time watching Barbara begin her family in Decatur and also visiting his son Mark and family in Texas and Oklahoma. He enjoyed some rewarding trips to Europe with their Decatur Sunday school class, as well as with other friends and groups. Van also served as President of the General Motors retirement club in the Atlanta area. Late in life Van was presented with several challenges to his physical health, and he always found a way to get back up and keep on living his life to the fullest. He never once complained about any of these obstacles. With courage and perseverance, he just threw laughter and love back at those situations. His life is a shining example of finding joy through giving to others and abiding love. For family and all others that knew him, the past memories are precious, his passing brings deep sorrow, and the grace of his loving touch continues on. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 A. M. at Decatur First United Methodist Church with Dr. David Naglee and Bishop L. Bevel Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 East Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, GA 30030. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
