Ford Strathy, son of Stuart and Elizabeth Strathy, was educated at Appleby College, Trinity College School and had matriculated at the University of Toronto. Strathy enlisted in 1916 for training in the Curtiss School. This led to further training in England before he was attached to the Royal Naval Air Service. Ford was assigned to the Dunkirk Aerodrome in July 1917. His first confirmed kill in air combat occurred on Aug. 15th, when he brought down a German fighter that displayed many Iron Crosses. Two days later his Camel was brought down behind German lines in a hail of gunfire from two enemy aircraft. Ford Strathy had intended to return to Canada on furlough the following November.
