Gail was born October 22, 1941 to Ralph and Lola (Pharis) Bachand in Sturgis, South Dakota, where he spent his childhood ranching with his family. He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1960 and then pursued a BA in music education at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. In 1971, Gail obtained a MA in music education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greely.

Gail met his beloved wife while they were both teaching in Battle Creek, Iowa and they were married November 4, 1972. The couple then moved west and in 1973 Gail became a certified aircraft mechanic at Colorado Aerotech in Broomfield. Gail returned to his true calling of music and taught instrumental music for 29 years, 22 of which were in the Sioux Falls School District, before retiring in 2000.

Gail had many passions to fill his leisure time, including his Harley Davidson, creating in his wood shop, and arranging music. He had an avid interest in machines of various modes of transport. He was excited about his newest endeavor as a member of the area New Horizons band.
