Camelia (Alten) Demmon, age 100, was the middle daughter of Grand Rapids artist, Mathias J. Alten & Bertha (Schwind) Alten. Along with her sisters, Eleanore (Gilleo) and Viola (Gatzweiler), she was the subject of a number of Alten's paintings including:

* Camelia of the Delphiniums, 1919 (right >)
* Portrait of Camelia Alten, 1915 (2)
* Portrait of Camelia at 17, 1915
* July Memories, 1916 (Camelia on horseback)
* Three Sisters in an Orchard, 1919
* The Artist's Daughters, 1925
* Three Girls in a Rowboat, 1926
* Portrait of Camelia Alten Demmon, 1927
* Picnic Manhattan Beach Reeds Lake, 1924
* Lilacs, n.d.

When she was growing up, her parents owned & operated a paint and wallpaper store called "Schwind and Alten" (32 W. Bridge Street, Grand Rapids, MI). Her grandmother, Theresa (Kuenzel) Schwind also financially invested in the business as it had previously been owned by Camelia's grandfather, Ferdinand Schwind, prior to his passing in 1894.

In 1910, the Altens traveled to Europe on a ship called the "Campania" and spent a significant amount of time in Holland while her father painted. The Altens moved into their E. Fulton Street home in 1913. Camelia attended Grand Rapids Central High School and graduated in either 1917 or 1918. As a teen, Camelia played the mandolin, enjoyed ice skating on Reeds Lake, going to the movies with friends at the Majestic (the "Maj") or the Empress, and running errands around town driving Newt (her father's Ford).

She graduated from Michigan State Normal College in 1925.

On July 26, 1924, at age 22, she married Grand Rapids architect, Ralph W. Demmon (1984-1978). They had two daughters. The Demmon family attended Fountain Street Baptist Church. All four are listed in the membership records dated 1937 with their home address listed 13 Baynton NE, Grand Rapids, MI.
