After the early death of his parents in Prince Edward Island, he was educated in England, and studied engineering at Cambridge University.
He returned to Canada in 1868, working on surveys through the Rocky Mountains for the C.P.R. He later operated a lumber business in Winnipeg and engineered the first bridge over the Red River, and also a bridge over the Assiniboine River. Edward served during the Riel Rebellion. Jarvis street in Winnipeg was named in his honor.
