Lester Adams retires
from Sayre Public Schools


Lester Adams, Rt 4, Sayre, retired in May 1976 following 30 years as a teacher.

A native of Clinton and graduate of Clinton High School, Adams attended SWSC 1922-34 when he received a B.S. degree and a M.E. degree in 1946 from West Texas State at Canyon Tex and Counselor's Certificate in 1963 from SWSC at Weatherford.

He taught his first year in the Calumet High School, at Keens Business College at Elk City, one year; Crawford High School two years; Merritt High School two years. He was superintendent of the Hext Consolidated School 20 years and was Sayre High School counselor 14 years. He taught in Sayre Junior College and Sayre High School as Counselor 14 years.

Mr. Adams officiated basketball games and track meets in Beckham County and surrounding counties approximately 20 years. He served six years on the State Advisory Council of the State Department of Educations.

He is a member of the Sayre church of Christ.

His wife, Marie, retired as an elementary school teacher in 1972.

They have a daughter Mrs. Dan Ryan of Abernathy, Tex. and son Gary of Sayre.

Adams will continue to live in Sayre with some farm and ranch activity and travel.

Lester Adams seeks post
as Mayor of Sayre today


Lester Adams authorized the Sayre Journal today to announce that he is a candidate for Mayor of the City of Sayre subject to election March 1979.

Adams is a retired teacher, having served 14 years prior to retirement as Sayre High School counselor and Junior College instructor.

Before coming to Sayre, he was superintendent of Hext Consolidate School for 20 years.

A native of Clinton and graduate of Canton High School, he recerved his B.S. degree from Oklahoma State University in 1938, his Master of Education degree from West Texas State at Canyon, Tex. 1946 and has Counselor's Certificate from SWSU at Weatherford in 1963.

Adams has served the past ten years on the State Advisory Council. Title IV-C Federal Programs, State Department of Education.

Lester and Marie are members of the Sayre Church of Christ. They have a daughter, Mrs. Dan Ryan of Abernathy Tex, and a son, Gary, of Woodward.

Funeral services for Lester Adams were held January 7, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. in the Sayre Church of Christ with Kevin Ballard officiating. Burial was in the Sayre Doxey Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.

Lester, the son of Ada M. and Forrest Adams, was born November 23, 1914 in Clinton, OK and passed away January 4, 2001 in the Bell Avenue Nursing Center, at the age of 86 years, one month and 11 days.

Lester graduated from Clinton High School in 1933 and held the state 100 yard dash record at 9.7 seconds for over a quarter of a century. He attended Southwester State College in Weatherford before graduating from Oklahoma A & M in 1937.

He married Marie Jewel Kennermer at Clinton, OK on September 23, 1938. He later received his M.E. Degree from West Texas State College in Canyon, TX and his Counsellor Certificate from Southwestern. He taught in Calumet High School, Keens Business College, Crawford, Merritt before becoming Superintendent of Hext Hext Consolidated School System from 1943 to 1963, In 1958 Lester and Marie moved to Sayre to make their home.

Lester later became a counselor(sic) for Sayre High School for 14 years and also taught at Sayre Junior College. He also officiated basketball games and track meets in Beckham and surrounding counties approximately 20 years. He served six years on the State Advisory Council of the State Department of Education. Lester also served on the Beckham County Election Board for a number of years.

Even though Lester had lost his arm at the age of 3; he never saw it as a disability and was an avid bird hunter and enjoyed flying, water skiing and raising registered Angus cattle. He was a member of the Sayre Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister, Sylvia Carson.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dan Ryan of Abernathy, TX; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Steve Adams of Sayre; seven grandchildren, Trent, Marci, Prim, Christy, Vicky, Rachel and Lori; and five great grandchildren, Ryan, Colt, Cade, Trevor, and Cody.
