Mrs. Mary Bradt Nelson, 78, mother of Gov. Gaylord Nelson, died Monday in a Madison nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Nelson, of Clear Lake in Polk County, was a descendant of William Bradt, one of the men who founded the Republican Party at Ripon in 1854. She was born June 25, 1882, at the Bradt family farm near Northport in Waupaca County.
She was a graduate of Marquette University and served as Polk County nurse before marrying the late Dr. Anton N. Nelson, a Clear Lake physician, Oct. 10, 1910.
Dr. Nelson died in a La Crosse hospital in June, 1958, after suffering a heart attack while attending the Democratic state convention in La Crosse. Gov. Nelson, then a state senator, was the Democratic candidate for governor at that time.
She is survived by four children, Gov. Nelson, Mrs. Karl Lee of 5750 Bittersweet Pl., Mrs. Spencer Yates, Roseburg, Ore., and Stannard Nelson, El Paso, Tex.; two brothers, Eugene Bradt, Northport, and George Bradt, Everett, Wash., and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Clear Lake Methodist church at 11 a.m. Thursday, with burial in the Clear Lake cemetery. Gov. Nelson has cancelled his Thursday appointments to attend the funeral.
The body was taken to the Fitch-Lawrence funeral home here.
