Betty Jane Sturm Bennett died at her home in Millcreek of cancer on April 27, 2002.

She was born in Ogden on March 26, 1928, a daughter of Henry Sturm and Oveda Hickman Sturm.

She attended elementary and junior high school in Ogden, and graduated from Ogden High School in 1946.

Betty attended the University of Utah and Weber State University, graduating from Weber in 1961 with an Associate Degree of Science in nursing, and became an R.N. In 1983, she obtained a BS degree in General Studies from Weber with an emphasis on Family Life, Political Science, and Philosophy.

She had a wide variety of interests, and was a lifelong learner, taking classes in art, photography, and Honors Directed Readings. She was a gifted needlework artist and decorator.

Betty had a long and varied career in nursing. In the early years, she did private duty nursing and occupational nursing. She established the first medical dispensaries at the Utah Job Corps and the Wilson Meat Packing plant in Ogden.

She was involved in the first professional utilization review organization in Utah. This organization reviewed the utilization of services to government employees in Utah hospitals.

She was later employed by the McKay Dee Hospital to review utilization of services for all hospital admissions to ensure medical insurance reimbursement. She completed her career in the Education Department of the McKay Dee Hospital, retiring in 1989.

Betty loved beauty, whether in nature, art, music, or needlework. She was active in the medical auxiliary, Weber State faculty wives, and the Red Cross Board of Directors in Ogden; and as a hostess in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City.

Betty married Dr. Harold DeMars on August 19, 1950 in Elko, Nevada. They had two sons, Guy Victor DeMars (Judy), West Linn, Oregon; and Val Henry DeMars (Lotus), Moab. They were later divorced. She married James R. Foulger in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 18, 1960. They had one son, Larence Jon Foulger, Ogden, and were later divorced. She married Wallace Grant Bennett on May 27, 1994 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Betty is survived by her husband, Millcreek; her three sons; and eleven grandchildren. She is also survived by the five Bennett children and fourteen Bennett grandchildren she loved as her own. Her children and grandchildren on both sides of the family adored her.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Mill Creek Second Ward Chapel, Salt Lake Mill Creek Stake Center, 4220 South 420 East (off 500 East), on Thursday, May 2, 2002 at 12:00 p.m. Friends may visit at Russon Brothers Salt Lake Mortuary, 255 South 200 East, on Wednesday, May 1, 2002 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
