His only son Charles Henry Lyell was also a Liberal Member of Parliament. Since his son died in 1918 , his grandson Charles Anthony Lyell succeeded to both the baronetcy and barony. His son died while serving at the British Embassy in Washington D.C. Charles Anthony Lyell died in action during World War II, was the recipient of the Victoria Cross, and was married with a son.
