CT1 US NAVY

Jewel Wilson Hanson, 90, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2014 at home with her loving husband by her side. Jewel was born on April 26, 1924 in Millport, Alabama and was the daughter of the late Levert Emery Wilson and Edwina Prater. With their 66th wedding anniversary approaching, Jewel is survived by her beloved husband, James L. Hanson (Jim), and their children: Jo Ann Meeker (Rick) and Jody Peek (Grover). Jim and Jewel's grandchildren: Michele (Keith), Rick (Lauren), Jackie (Brendon), and Craig, and their great-grandchildren: Ben and Breigh. Her family will deeply miss their Gram. She always enjoyed keeping up with the latest activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed writing to extended family in various parts of the country, frequently writing letters and sending care packages.

Jewel proudly served in the United States Navy as a CT1 from 1944 - 1949 and during that time met Jim who was also serving our country. Jim and Jewel were later married on August 6, 1948 at the Naval Chapel in Washington, DC. Jim and Jewel both had a deep sense of pride for their service in the Navy, and traveled the world as a family with Jo Ann and Jody while Jim was stationed at various Navy bases in and outside the U.S. Some of Jewel's favorite activities included watching sports, football was her favorite. Jewel and Jim also did quite a bit of traveling after retirement, including taking time to attend Navy reunions.

Jewel loved taking notes about their trips and writing postcards to family from the road. She also spent several years knitting slippers; they were quite popular with countless family and friends. Jewel was proud to be from Alabama, always rooting for the Crimson Tide, but also grew to love her adopted state of South Carolina where she and Jim have lived since 1994.

Friends may call at the Dunbar Funeral Home at 7600 Woodrow Street in Irmo on Sunday evening, June 15, 2014 from5:00 to 7:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 11.00 a.m.. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in Jewel's memory to Southeastern Children's Home, P.O. Box 339 Duncan, SC 29334, www.sech.org or the charity of your choice
