1972 World 250cc Motorcycle Champion. Jarno Saarinen was born in Turku, Finland, and began motorcycle racing on ice which resulted in his huge ability on two wheels. He began Grand Prix racing in 1970 and in 1971 came 2nd in the World 250cc Championship. In 1972 he won the World 250cc Championship and came 2nd in the 350cc class. In 1973 he won the Daytona 200 in Florida against more powerful machines. At the Italian GP at Monza, there was a terrible accident at the Curve Grande when there was a multiple pile-up on oil left from a previous race. Both Renzo Pasolini and Jarno Saarinen were killed, and many other riders seriously injured. Saarinen thrilled the crowds for only a short time but he left his mark - and after another fatal accident, Monza was no longer was used for motorcycle racing.
