Born in Germany as Michael Betteldorf, he changed his name to Bettendorf upon his arrival to the US. He lived in Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas before finally settling in Iowa where his sons Joseph and William had gone into business making railroad cars. He lived out his retirement in the town named for his family.
