Author. He was a prolific 18th century German author. Born the son of a judicial officer, he began in 1849 an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Magdeburg and attending philosophical and historical lectures in Berlin in 1854. He was a freelance writer in Wolfenbüttel and Stuttgart and from 1870 in Braunschweig, where he also began to write. His first work, "Die Chronik der Sperlingsgasse," was published under the pseudonym Jakob Corvinus . The book was a monetary success. The bulk of his work comprises more than 30 novels, which remind some critics of author Charles Dickens. Along with Theodor Fontane, Raabe is one of the most important storytellers of German "poetic" realism. His works include depictions of society, historical novels, novellas, and poems. Though it is less well-known, he was also a gifted painter, and some 600 of his works exist in private hands or in the Braunschweig Museum. The city of Braunschweig made him an honorary citizen and created the renowned Wilhelm Raabe Prize for German-language writers in his honor. His works include "Die Chronik der Sperlingsgasse" and "Ein Frühling" both in 1857, "Die Kinder von Finkenrode" in 1859, "Die Leute aus dem Walde" 3 Bde. in 1863, "Der Hungerpastor" 3 Bde in 1864, "Die schwarze Galeere in 1861, "Der Dräumling" and 1872, and "Hastenbeck" in 1899.
