John M. Wells was born in 1842. At the age of 17, he enlisted with the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company K, "Birney's Zouaves". He served his three year term and then re-enlisted with the 82nd Pennsylvania Volunteers for 7 months. He had seen action at Sven Pines/ Fair Oaks, Fredericksburg, Gettsburg, Mine Run, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Sailors Creek and Appomattox. After the war he returned to Rancocas , NJ and married his wife Amelia. He died on October 18th 1894 and was interred on October 21st 1894. He is buried at The Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington, NJ.
