Theodore S. Bear is my 2nd great grandfather.

Theodore was known by all as Thaddeus. I'm not sure why. All of my great grandmother's handwritten notes refer to him as such.

Theodore S. Bear was born on October 17, 1841 in Pennsylvania. His father's name is Isaac. His mother's name is currently unknown. May be Kockendack or Cookindorf. According to the Pennsylvania State Archives, very few vital birth records exist from this time. Nothing was found for my 2nd great grandfather.

Research at the State Historical Society of Iowa Archives found his death certificate. It states Theodore died on 16 Oct 1919 of Encephalitis lethargica (sleeping sickness). Age: 78 years. Occupation: Teamster. Birthplace: Penn. Name of father: Isaac Bear. Birthplace of father: Penn. Maiden name of mother: Cookindorfer. Birthplace of mother: Penn.

Theodore died at Mercy Hospital in Davenport, Scott, IA, US, after a brief illness.

Survivors at the time of his death included three children:

1.) Bryan Frank Bear of Davenport, IA
2.) Viola Edith Bear of Davenport, IA
3.) Alvin Bear of Muscatine, Muscatine, IA

His obit also lists a living sister who was named as Mrs. Nancy Warden of Davenport, Scott, IA. She was the informant on his death certificate.

The funeral took place at Henry Runge's Sons' funeral parlor and he was buried in the Oakdale Cemetery located at 2501 Eastern Avenue, Davenport, IA 52803

Other Bear's in this cemetery include an Isaac Bear and an Emma Buchen Brown Bear. Dates and grave locations seem to indicate this Issac is a relative. However, there is no information to tie them to Theodore.
