Russian Historian. He was the son of two Russian poets Akhmatova and Gumilyov. His parents divorced when he was a baby and he was brought up by his grandmother. When he was 9, his father was executed. While studying history in the Saint-Petersburg University, he was arrested and sent into GULAG. After his liberation in 1944 he joined the army, finishing the war in Berlin. Returning back to his work, he continued his research only to be arrested again. He continued to work even in Gulag pursuing his interests in the history of Middle Asia and its influence on European and Russian historical development. Although his ideas were rejected by the official Soviet doctrine and most of his monographs banned from publication, Gumilev came to attract much publicity, especially in the Perestroika years. His most famous works are: Ethnogenesis and the Biosphere of Earth (1978), Ancient Rus and the Great Steppe (1989), An End and a New Beginning (1989), and From the Rus to Russia (1992).
