Wife of Jules Leger, Governor-General of Canada. Born in Montreal, Quebec as Gabrielle Carmel. Gabrielle was introduced to Jules when he was a student at the Sorbonne, he was a student of law. They would marry in Paris a year later in 1938. Together they would have two daughters. In 1974 six months after Jules became Governor-General he had a stroke. It paralyzed his left arm, and made it difficult for him to speak. So Gabrielle shared the reading of the Throne Speech with her husband in 1976 and 1978. She assumed other duties of the office, and continued in that role for more than four years. Her contributions to her husband's term were recognized by her inclusion in Mr. Léger's official portrait, which hangs in the Entrance Hall at Rideau Hall. Gabrielle is the only spouse to have been featured in a portrait along with the Governor General. She died after a long illness at the age of 81.
