Scottish soldier, born in Hull, England to Scottish parents and educated in Birkenhead and Glasgow. He trained as a marine engineer and was at sea when war broke out in August 1914. He returned from Singapore to join the Royal Scots Fusiliers, serving from February 1915. He was awarded a Military Cross after the Battle of Loos in 1915 (London Gazette June 2 1916), and was wounded and listed as missing in the attack on Guillemont while in command of C Company. Seventeen out of twenty officers were killed or wounded and 613 out of 750 other ranks were killed, wounded or captured. He was a former member of the Officer Training Corps of Glasgow High School and of Glasgow University. His ceremonial sword was inherited by a nephew who used it on active service in 6th Bn Highland Light Infantry from 1939 to 1945, with the hilt adapted.
