Former Irish MP at Westminster, Junior Lord of the Treasury in Lord Aberdeen's government. Caused the collapse of the Tipperary Bank and other companies by his swindles, and committed suicide by taking prussic acid, on Hampstead Heath. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the West Cemetery.Charles Dickens is said to have modelled Mr Merdle in "Little Dorrit" on him. See "Prince of Swindlers - John Sadleir MP" by James O'Shea, Dublin 1999. His brother, James Sadleir MP, was expelled by Parliament,the first for almost 40 years, and fled to the continent. He was murdered in Switzerland in 1881 during a robbery.
