U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran. Greg was an intelligent career U.S. Marine Corps officer, a devoted family man and a great all around guy. Joining the Marine Corps right after high school in 1954, he went on to be a decorated Marine Fighter Pilot. With his love for science and math, he earned a degree in mathematics from San Diego State University, while serving in the military. In September 1958, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" and together they had two children. During the Vietnam War, he served two combat tours (1965, 1968-69). In the first tour, he was a pilot of a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in a US Marines VMFA Fighter-Attack Squadron. The second tour, he was assigned as the Executive Officer of the original HML-167, stationed at Mount Marble head, which was the only attack helicopter squadron in a forward combat zone. As second in command, he was active flying helicopter missions dropping supplies to front line troops and performing medical evacs. His awards included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with combat "V", Air Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, Vietnam Service Medal with six bronze stars, Meritorious Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Color Meritorious Unit Citation with palm, Navy Unit Citation, National Defense service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. He also was a master marksman, being awarded the U.S. Marine Pistol Expert badge five times. After his service in Vietnam, he was a Vought F-8 Crusader fighter pilot Flight Commander with the U.S. Marines VMF(AW) group at El Toro Air Base, California, until he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in September 1974. For the next fifteen years, he worked as a successful stockbroker and retired in 1990, at age 55. In retirement with his wife and little dog Jackie, they enjoyed a simple life of peace and quiet at their home in Vista, California. He and Betty made their Golden Anniversary as they were married for a little over 50 years. Greg was proceeded in death by his wife Betty in 2009 and he is survived by his son Jeff and daughter Anne.
