He was a well known painter whose wife and sons were also very talented in their own areas. Born in New Zealand in 1862 the family moved to Melbourne in the mid 1870s and he married Emma Minnie a Beckett in 1886. They traveled frequently, having an exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in 1891, and spending many of their summers in Tasmania where the scenery inspired both of them.

He was an artist of charm and ability but he didn't reach the heights of his contemporaries in the Heidelberg school. Many deemed his wife's work as being superior to his. They had two talented sons: William Merric Boyd, a potter, and Theodore Penleigh Boyd, another painter.
