He enlisted on October 5th 1914 and was promoted to sergeant on January 15th 1915. Overseas on 4th March 1917, he was killed in action on the morning of 9th October 1917 (battle of Poelcapelle)by a German sniper whilst bringing in a wounded comrade (who had been hit in the leg by the same sniper). Body later lost in the German bombardment of later that day. He was also commemorated on the Burnley Technical School roll of honour.
